SIXTH FORM CURRICULUM – YEAR 12 & 13

Inspiring Purpose. Driving Passion.

A levels now & IBDP after 3 Years

Sunmarke School follows the National Curriculum of England. From the third year of operation, Sunmarke will continue to offer the National Curriculum to Year 11, but will become an IB World School and will offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) in Years 12 and 13.

Both curricula offer a structured framework with rigor and creativity, and the internationalism, breadth, and flexibility to pursue multiple career pathways in university.

Both the National Curriculum and IB are the world’s most sought after and globally accepted school curricula. Both curricula are underpinned by a strong research-driven programme in Mathematics and English, as well as all the major subjects in the Arts, Sciences, and Humanities, providing students a strong educational foundation.

Both curricula encourage students to be active learners and to openly challenge ideas and discuss them with their teachers and peers. The curricula lay a strong emphasis on developing critical thinking, problem-solving, inquiry, creativity and ‘learning how to learn’.

Why the A Level as a Programme of Study?

The A Levels allow students to specialize in subjects that they enjoy and are interested in. The A Levels also provide the required depth across a wide variety of subjects.

The modular system of assessment of the A Levels allows students to receive grades and feedback in a format that is benchmarked and calibrated, and well accepted by university admission departments worldwide.

We offer additional academic opportunities to Sixth Form students to supplement their core A Level courses. Subject departments provide enrichment sessions for students considering the study of a particular subject at university. Students undertake an ‘Extended Project Qualification’ in order to explore a topic of personal interest in greater depth and also get involved in administering school extracurricular activities should they have an interest. In addition, Sixth Form students are able to immerse their interests in sports, drama, music, the performing arts, and a wide variety of cultural and other pursuits, and house competitions. Sixth Form students at our school benefit from world-class teaching, outstanding facilities, strong leadership opportunities, and a rich and diverse range of co-curricular and extracurricular activities.

We provide students an education and the skills and confidence to succeed in life beyond school.

Note, after 3 years of operation, Sunmarke will become an IB World School and will offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme in Years 12 and 13.

Key Stage 5 (6th Form): Year 12 & 13 – A Level Programme of Study

Over the two years of the Sixth Form in Year 12 and Year 13, students follow a curriculum based on the A Levels (Advanced Level). Whilst it is common practice for students to generally study three subjects in their A Levels, a significant number of Fortes students study four subjects.

Students receive a range of advice and guidance from our career counselors, specialist teachers, house tutors, and head of the sixth form when deciding which subject combinations to take in Year 12 and 13. Students also participate in the A Levels Choices and Careers Fair and advice seminars facilitated by the school.

For Sixth Form entry in 2015, we are currently offering Advanced Levels (A Levels) – which if combined with Core Mathematics and the Extended Project Qualification will allow students to achieve either the AQA Baccalaureate or a Technical Baccalaureate at the end of Year 13, in preparation for University.

Students must select their courses and fill out and submit the A Level Options Form to the school by the end of Term 2 in Year 11.

Once students have embarked on their program of study in Year 12, it is not normally possible for changes to be made to the subjects chosen. If a student wishes to make changes, they should discuss this with a senior member of staff.

All students will be required to discuss their choice of subject with their Subject Teachers, Form Tutor, and the Career Counsellor. For more information, the school holds multiple Options Evenings with the first one taking place on approximately Sunday, 15th November 2016 at 4.30pm to 7.00pm. Students and parents will be able to speak to all staff for further clarification and for an update on the child’s progress at school.

A Level Minimum Entry Requirements

Our current entry criteria for Sixth Form starts at a minimum of 8 GCSEs at Grade 6 and above, including English and Mathematics 7 as a minimum. To study the core subjects, students are expected to achieve a Grade 7 or higher.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

From the third year of operation, Sunmarke will continue to offer the National Curriculum to Year 11, but will become an IB World School and will offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) in Years 12 and 13.

The IBDP develops in students the knowledge, skills and personal enterprise to not only succeed in today’s increasingly complex world but also to contribute to the lives of others and society. The IBDP promotes internationalism through the study of at least two languages and takes learning beyond the classroom through the extended essay, community activity, and independent research based learning.
